2006 Great Lakes Valley Conference Winter and Spring Scholar Athletes
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Eight student-athletes have been selected as Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2005-06 winter and spring seasons in their respective sport for the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The league selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American standards (3.20), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is done by each institution's Faculty Athletic Representative.

  Baseball: Andrew Silver, Rockhurst University
Andrew Silver, a native of Maryland Heights, Missouri, was a Chemistry major at Rockhurst University. In his senior year as pitcher for the Hawks, Silver was named GLVC Second Team All-Conference, First Team Academic All-District, and earned a spot on the Dean's Honor Roll. Silver won his only start against GLVC Champion Northern Kentucky University when the Hawks competed at the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament. He started 13 of his 14 games played, posting a 7-6 record with 56 strikeouts and a 1.90 ERA. His ERA placed him ninth in the GLVC and 19th among Division II pitchers. Silver's seven wins tied him for fifth in the GLVC. The Hawks finished second in NCAA II in overall ERA. Rockhurst ended their season 36-22 overall and 30-14 in the GLVC, finishing third in league standings and fourth at the GLVC Tournament.
  Men's Basketball: Jonathan Griffin, University of Missouri-St. Louis
Jonathan Griffin, of St. Louis, Missouri, majored in Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. In his senior season, Griffin was named GLVC Second Team All-Conference, Second Team All-Region (becoming just the third UMSL player in school history to earn that honor), ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Second Team, and an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar First Team Selection. He is a four-time GLVC Academic All-Conference selection and was named UMSL Student-Athlete of the Month four times in the 2005-06 school year. For the 2005-06 season, Griffin led the team in scoring (18.3 points per game), rebounding (7.1 per game), assists (102), steals (46), and blocked shots (15) marking the second straight year he led the team in all five categories. He finished fourth in the GLVC in scoring and fifth in the GLVC in rebounding and was in the top ten in the GLVC in both assists and steals. Griffin scored a season best 30 points in a win over the University of Southern Indiana and pulled down a season best 13 rebounds against SIU Edwardsville. For his career, he finished second on the UMSL all-time scoring list with 1,739 career points, and is seventh in career rebounds with 652. He ranks third in career steals, fifth in career assists and tenth in career blocked shots, becoming just the second player in school history to rank in the top ten in all five of those statistics. For the 2005-06 season, the Rivermen slated a 14-13 overall and 7-12 GLVC record.
  Women's Basketball: Mary Moskal, Lewis University
Mary Moskal, of Cherry Valley, Illinois, is a junior forward/guard for Lewis University, where she majors in Biology. In her junior season, Moskal was named Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region First Team, All-GLVC First Team, GLVC Player of the Year and was awarded GLVC Player of the Week two times. She earned CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, Academic All-GLVC, and Dean's List honors and was a recipient of Lewis University's Delahanty Award for academic excellence among student-athletes. In the 2005-06 season, Moskal started all 30 games for the Flyers. On Lewis' career lists, she moved into 10th place in scoring (1,236 points), first place in field-goal shooting (55.5 percent) and free throws attempted (554), and second in free throws made (429). She averaged 16.1 points (led team), 6.4 rebounds (second on team), 3.0 assists (third on team), 0.5 blocked shots (led team) and 0.9 steals (fourth on team). Moskal led the Flyers in minutes played (32.5 per game), field-goal shooting (57.1 percent), offensive rebounds (2.0 per game), free throws made (154) and free throws attempted (205). She committed only 2.8 fouls per 40 minutes and had four "double-doubles" in points and rebounds. She scored in double figures in 27 of 30 games, scored 20 or more points nine times, and produced an 11-of-11 shooting performance in a win over Bellarmine University. She tied her career high of 26 points (including 10-of-10 at the foul line) against Drury University in the NCAA tournament. In GLVC rankings, Moskal finished first in scoring, third in field-goal percentage, tenth in rebounding, and thirteenth in assists. In NCAA rankings, she was 10th in field-goal percentage and 76th in scoring. The Flyers tallied a 19-11 overall and 14-5 GLVC record, finishing second in GLVC team standings and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they won the first NCAA tournament game in program history.
  Men's Golf: Mark Krahe, Northern Kentucky University
Mark Krahe, a native of Edgewood, Kentucky, was a senior men's golf student-athlete who majored in Sports Business and Business Administration. In his final season for the Norse, Krahe was named GLVC All-Conference, placing fifth at the GLVC Championship, helping his team earn the title. He was named PING/NCAA All-Great Lakes Region, PING/NCAA Division II All-America (Honorable Mention) and earned seven top 10 finishes. Krahe was named Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-America, GLVC All-Academic, NKU Campus Book & Supply All-Academic, and was named to the NKU Dean's List. Krahe earned a 73.29 stroke average, placing second at the NKU Invitational, ninth at the Rivermen Invitational, 61st at the Fall Regional, eighth at the LaRosa Collegiate Cup, 12th at the NKU Spring Regional Invitational, fifth at the GLVC Championship, third at the Great Lakes Spring Regional, and fourth at the NCAA II Super Regional. As a team, the Norse finished second at the NCAA II Super Regional.
  Softball: Erika Rothbauer, Northern Kentucky University
Erika Rothbauer, of Louisville, Kentucky, was a senior second baseman and lead-off hitter at Northern Kentucky University where she majored in English. In her final season with the Norse, Rothbauer was named GLVC First Team All-Conference, First Team NFCA All-Great Lakes Region, and Third Team NFCA All-America. She was honored with the NKU Career Achievement Award, NKU Margery Rouse Female Student-Athlete of Distinction, and the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Women's Sports Association College Player of the Year for Softball. Rothbauer graduated Summa Cum Laude, was a finalist for the NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and was named to the NKU Honors List (4.00), Academic All-GLVC list, and the NKU Campus Book and Supply Academic Team. She's also a member of the National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma. Rothbauer started all 62 of NKU's games for the 2005-06 season. In NKU and GLVC combined statistics, she earned a .379 hitting percentage (second at NKU), 211 at bats (first at NKU and GLVC), 46 runs (first at NKU and fourth in GLVC), 80 hits (first at NKU and third in GLVC), 30 base on balls (first at NKU and second in GLVC), .461 on base percentage (first at NKU and second in GLVC). The Norse finished the season with a 41-21 overall and 15-9 GLVC record, good for third place in league standings and third place at the GLVC tournament. NKU was selected as the fifth seed in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and finished second.
  Men's Tennis: Matias Oddone, Drury University
Matias Oddone, of Cordoba, Argentina, was a senior at Drury University where he majored in Computer Science. Oddone was the number one singles and number two doubles player with Krisztian Kaplan. He became the first Panther in the school's illustrious tennis history to capture the Wilson/ITA Nationals singles championship. Oddone played in the finals of the 'Super Bowl' of the Wilson/ITA National Tennis Championships, losing 6-4, 7-5 to NAIA champion Mislav Hizak of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University. Oddone was undefeated in 2006 regular season and at nationals in singles. He was an NCAA Division II All-American in singles and doubles and was awarded the ITA sportsmanship award in fall 2005. He was also named an ITA scholar-athlete. Oddone went 30-1 in singles and 25-6 in doubles play and was ranked number one nationally and regionally in ITA singles and was ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region with Kevin Otto in doubles. The Panthers slated an overall record of 25-1 for 2006, finishing first in the GLVC. They ended their successful season with a 5-3 loss to Valdosta State in the national quarterfinals.
  Men's Track and Field: Jesse Davis, University of Southern Indiana
Jesse Davis, of Bloomington, Indiana, was a senior middle distance runner at the University of Southern Indiana, where he majored in Social Science Teaching. In his final indoor season as an Eagle, Davis earned All-America honors with a fifth place finish in the 800 meters and also won the 800 meters and the 3,000 meters at the GLVC Indoor Championships. He earned two GLVC All-Conference honors and set the school record in the 800 meters during the indoor season and All-Conference honors in the steeplechase during the outdoor season. At the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, Davis finished 17th in the 800 meters. For his accomplishments in the classroom, Davis was named to the Academic All-GLVC list. The University of Southern Indiana finished fifth at both the GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships for 2005-06.
  Women's Track and Field: Becca Kueny, University of Missouri-Rolla
Becca Kueny, of Boonville, Missouri, is a javelin thrower at the University of Missouri-Rolla, where she majors in Ceramic Engineering. This past season at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, Kueny placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 148-6 to earn All-America honors. She won the GLVC title in the event with a throw of 138-6. She finished among the top five in every meet this season. For her dedication to academics, Kueny was named to the UMR Dean's List, is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, was named to CoSIDA's Academic All-District First Team, and was a UMR scholar-athlete award recipient. The Miners finished seventh at the GLVC Indoor Championship and sixth at the Outdoor Championship.
